HOTEL AND GOLF COURSES
THE HOTEL VILLA PADIERNA
The 5 star Hotel Villa Padierna is built like a Tuscan palace, in the beautiful surrounding of its own 3 golf courses, all around the Flamingos Golf Club.
It is a privately owned villa with a unique decoration in all rooms and public areas.. Paintings and statues from a private collection are carefully integrated into this fantastic building. Statues and fountains from the same collection also appear at unexpected pleasant spots around the golf courses. Open fire places and a touch of English decor make the Villa Padierna a wonderful place to pop into for a drink, snack, or a meal.
The hotel restaurants have the most beautiful views over the golf course, the Mediterranean Sea , Gibraltar and Africa , and offer a great variety of typical Spanish and international dishes. It has just opened a beautiful spa centre, with beauty treatment rooms.
When you visit the hotel, you can understand why it is a member of Leading Small Hotels of the World and has been voted 7th 'Best Hotel in the World' in the F.T.
The Spa offers relaxation and treatments that are incomparable.
The amphitheatre hosts weddings and concerts.
THE GOLF COURSE
The Flamingos PGA Golf courses are designed by Antonio Garrido, and there is an exceptional Golfing Academy.
Like many of the courses on the Costa del Sol, Flamingos demands some accurate tee shots, and certainly needs playing more than once to find the best lines on certain holes. Having said that, like most courses a bad shot is heavily penalised (lost!), but good shots are rewarded. However having found the green – your putting technique will be certainly put to the test. The greens vary greatly in size, and there are very subtle borrows. Some of the greens were re-designed when the course played host to the European Senior Tour for the past 2 years. To achieve an average of 2 putts per hole would be an achievement! The course has one of the best drainage systems on the Costa del Sol , and is usually playable when other courses are shut due to water-logging. Every hole is planted with different shrubs and trees with the intention that each hole will be named after the trees it is planted with.
Following on from the theme of the Hotel, you will come across statues and columns around the course, and even toilets styled in the same manner as the Hotel, complete with drinks machines. The fairways are over-sown with different grasses for winter playing and are therefore always in perfect condition. The greens are mowed by hand every morning. An 18 hole, par 72 course dedicated to the maintenance of an ecological balance, so often ignored with new golf courses
From each of the 18 holes you will enjoy breathtaking views of the Mediterranean , Africa and Gibraltar while experiencing all the peace and tranquillity you desire from a golf course.
It offers an exciting and varied design with ample but tiered greens along with undulating fairways that will impress even the most discerning golfer. A special feature is the "Arroyo del Taraje" stream that passes through the course and ends in a lake that is a natural border for the course at the beginning of holes one and ten. What you will notice is that every detail has been considered and cypress, oranges, olives, pines, carobs and chestnuts are the types of tree that give each hole its own identity.
The course is very enjoyable with a good mixture of both long and short holes. It is demanding for even the most experienced golfer, particularly the front nine holes. Just remember the views if you are not playing well – they are well worth the visit! The par 4 tenth is the most challenging hole where water plays its part. A good tee shot is required to set up the chance of playing over the water to reach the huge but undulating green. There are also two artificial lakes on the fifteenth and the right hand side of the seventeenth that make this even more interesting. Another feature is that all the bunkers are filled with ground marble. Although the course can be walked it is advisable to take advantage of the buggies on offer so you can sit and admire the scenic landscape between shots.
Other facilities include a practice area with putting green and for the golfer with relatively little experience or with limited time there is the short 9 hole Flamingo Blanco to enjoy.
